SCEC has been rather busy in the lead up to the UN Climate talks taking place in Paris this week. On Wednesday 25th November, Narelle and Leah attended the Queensland Climate Adaptation Strategy workshop at QUT in Brisbane. Minister for Environment and the Great Barrier Reef, Steven Miles, who has also completed Climate Reality training, announced he would be attending the conference. Stay tuned on the outcomes of the Paris conference through the Climate Councils website.SCECdec1.pngLater Wednesday evening, management committee member Natalie Martin-Booker hosted a film screening fundraiser of ‘This Changes Everything’ at the Maleny Community Centre on behalf of SCEC. The film was based on the novel by Natalie Klein who builds on the idea that ‘we can seize the existential crisis of climate change to transform our failed economic system into something radically better.’ We had over 120 people in attendance and the film was enjoyed by all. Special thanks to Natalie, along with management committee members Jillian and Mary-Jane, as well as Jenny from Maleny Land, Air and Water for ensuring an enjoyable evening was had by all.

The Paddle Out for Climate Action at Noosa was a huge success, with clear skies, calm water and over 300 participants showing up with either their surf craft or a sign of support. People of all ages were in attendance, some of whom travelled from all over the coast to join in the fun. Senior student from Maleny High School, Lilly addressed the audience on the day, and a local surf film producer took some aerial drone footage of everyone in the water. The event received a good deal of media coverage, appearing on the channel 7 and 10 news alongside the Climate Marches that happened on the same day throughout the nation. Photos from the event are being posted periodically on the newSCEC Instagram page which we invite you to follow. Additional media coverage can be found at Noosa News and The Sunshine Coast Daily.
