The Sunshine Coast Council, Coolum Coast Care & SEQ Catchments recently hosted the annual Growing Beaches Forum in Maroochydore.
It was an important & timely event where the science of coastal dynamics and ecology were presented. It is evident that the Sunshine Coast is increasingly vulnerable to climate change, more extreme weather events and sea level rise. While the case for carefully managed beach nourishment under specific conditions was discussed, it is still short-term & costly. What is clearly evident is there is no case for hard infrastructure such as rock walls within dynamic and sensitive coastal systems.
