Kabi Kabi People have Native Title recognised
The Federal Court has recognised the Native Title rights of the Kabi Kabi People, affirming their connection to more than 365,000 hectares of land and water in southeast Queensland, including approximately 20,000 hectares of waterways around the Sunshine Coast. This landmark decision acknowledges the Kabi Kabi People's traditional homelands and their unbroken connection to the land from west of Howard to Bribie Island.
Minister Scott Stewart emphasises the significance of native title recognition for preserving Indigenous culture and fostering reconciliation. Kabi Kabi Traditional Owner Michael Douglas expresses the importance of the determination to affirm their identity as traditional owners and looks forward to sharing its significance with the Kabi Kabi community.
We warmly welcome and deeply respect this significant and rightful milestone in recognising the unbroken connection to Country and rich culture of the Kabi Kabi people.
