Come along to hear from Associate Professor Andrew Olds from the University of the Sunshine Coast and SCEC Youth Ambassador Jarrah Small, as we discuss the challenges facing our marine environment, what we can do to support marine conservation, and how we can work towards safer beaches without compromising our marine life.

About the speakers

Associate Professor Andrew Olds

Andrew’s work on marine and coastal species, ecosystems and seascapes is helping to deliver practical solutions for conservation, restoration, fisheries and coastal stewardship. His research focuses on spatial ecology, biodiversity, ecosystem functioning and resilience, and he integrates these themes with training for community groups, citizen scientists and first-nations people. 

Andrew has over 20 years of experience working across universities, government, and private industry. He has designed, implemented, and managed major coastal conservation, restoration and monitoring projects in a diversity of tropical and subtropical seascapes. Andrew has also developed strong research, monitoring and training partnerships with government, NGOs, community groups and Traditional Owners across Australia and the tropical Pacific. 

Jarrah Small - SCEC Youth Ambassador

Jarrah Small is a highly respected young conservationist, environmental educator and wildlife rescuer whose extraordinary commitment to protecting the natural environment has earned her numerous awards and accolades.

Growing up immersed in biodiverse marine environments, Jarrah developed a deep love and respect for nature. She began her conservation journey at just six years old, picking up rubbish from beaches and parks and recognising the important role individuals can play in protecting our environment. Since then, she has led countless beach, ocean and land clean-ups..

A passionate public speaker and environmental educator, Jarrah inspires others to take action for a cleaner, healthier world where wildlife can thrive. She serves as the Youth Representative on the Board of the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation and has participated in youth panels alongside peers and decision-makers. She regularly speaks to councils, schools, universities and organisations about wildlife conservation, ocean health and the importance of youth involvement.

Jarrah also uses social media to educate, inspire and advocate for conservation. Whether rescuing wildlife, speaking on stage or removing fishing line and rubbish from the environment, her infectious optimism, enthusiasm and positivity inspire others to join her in protecting our planet.
