SCEC Advocacy

SCEC advocates for sound, evidence-based policies and planning frameworks that protect biodiversity, waterways, climate resilience and the natural character of the Sunshine Coast. Through detailed submissions, policy analysis and direct advocacy, we work to ensure environmental considerations remain central to decision-making at local, state and federal levels. We recognise that development will continue across our region. Our role is to ensure that growth occurs responsibly, sustainably and in accordance with planning codes and environmental legislation.

Some of our work in this area includes:

  • Prepare formal submissions on local and state planning instruments and legislative reforms

  • Advocate for strong environmental protections within development assessment processes

  • Write to decision-makers where environmental concerns arise

  • Recommend referrals under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act where required and not undertaken by proponents

  • Monitor major development proposals and their compliance with planning codes

  • We encourage and assist other groups and members of the community to engage in planning and policy consultation processes and have their say
  • Support environmentally responsible development that aligns with sustainability principles
