Help protect the Glasshouse Mountains by sending this email
The Glass House Mountains are one of Australia's most treasured landscapes. Recognised on the National Heritage List for their outstanding values, they hold deep and enduring cultural significance. They are cherished by local communities and by visitors from across Australia and around the world. They are an iconic part of Australia's natural heritage.
Heidelberg Materials is operating a quarry in the foothills of Mt Coonowrin. In 2023, the company submitted a development application to double the extraction volume from the quarry, blasting a further 66m in depth. In 2025, Heidelberg Materials filed a Planning & Environment Court appeal against a ‘deemed refusal’ by Sunshine Coast Council (No. 2448 of 2025). Sunshine Coast Council and community group, Save Our Glass House Mountains, defended the matter throughout the proceedings, however the Court ruled in favour of Heidelberg Materials
The Planning and Environment Court appeal has ended. The opportunity to protect our National Heritage has not.

Waterways flowing to the Ramsar-listed Pumicestone Passage and Moreton Bay wetlands
The Federal Environment Minister has the power to ensure Australia's federal environment laws are applied.
Please email Environment Minister Murray Watt. Respectfully ask him to require that Heidelberg Materials' proposed expansion of the Glass House Mountains Quarry be referred under the EPBC Act, to ensure its likely significant impacts can be properly assessed.
