In 1980, the Sunshine Coast Environment Council was formed as the regional conservation group. The two earliest conservation groups on the Sunshine Coast - the Noosa Parks Association (NPA) and the Queensland Wildlife Preservation Society (WPSQ) Caloundra branch – had been formed in 1962 and 1963.

The need for a formal networking organisation brought together representatives of 15 Sunshine Coast community groups and the Queensland Conservation Council on 21 April, 1980 in Maroochydore and it was agreed to form the Sunshine Coast Environment Council (SCEC) Inc.

You can find out more about SCEC history by reading the books below, and also find out some of the natural areas we have been able to conserve by reading about our past campaigns, and 'What might have been if not for SCEC'

Green Legends

For those concerned with the future of the Sunshine Coast environment, the book Green Legends is a fascinating insight into our past and the importance of vigilance both now and in the future. Written by former Maroochy Shire councilor and Sunshine Coast Environment Council manager, Elaine Green. This small but well researched account of the various trials, tribulations and campaigns since the late 1970s by one who was intimately involved at an intellectual and active level.

All proceeds from the sale of this book go directly to the Sunshine Coast Environment Council Inc.

Green Legends is available from SCEC at 35 Howard Street, Nambour. If you'd like one sent to you, give the SCEC office on (07) 5441  5747 a call and payment can be made over the phone.

Forty Years Strong

Forty Years Strong was written for SCEC's 40th Anniversary in 2021. It is a wonderful account of SCEC's first 40 years. SCEC is an amalgam of its member groups, and it continues to be a strong advocate for the environment into its 5th decade. People power has changed governments and improved environmental regulation greatly, but there is so much more to do.
