SCEC Celebrates 45th Anniversary
The Sunshine Coast Environment Council marked a significant milestone this year, celebrating 45 years of community-led environmental advocacy with a special afternoon event at the Maroochy Surf Club — 45 Years Strong.
The celebration brought together wonderful Honorary Life Members and other valued Members, long-time supporters and community leaders. We were honoured by the attendance of Sunshine Coast Mayor Rosanna Natoli and Tim Burns, Division 3 Councillor and Co-Environment & Liveability Portfolio holder. It was a fabulous opportunity to acknowledge SCEC’s rich history and enduring legacies built over decades of grassroots action, collaboration and care for the Sunshine Coast’s natural environment.
Reflecting on the journey so far, the event also looked confidently to the future. Mayor Rosanna Natoli delivered an inspiring address imagining the Sunshine Coast 45 years from now, painting a vision of a healthy environment and speaking to the collective choices, leadership and community action that could help us get there. SCEC Patron Professor Ian Lowe AO followed with thought-provoking reflections and questions for sustainable futures, reinforcing the importance of long-term thinking and shared responsibility.
In the spirit of collaboration that has defined SCEC for 45 years, participants also took part in workshop-style discussions, contributing ideas and recommendations to help guide SCEC’s direction and impact into the future.
A special moment of the afternoon saw past SCEC Presidents in attendance come together to cut the anniversary cake. The 45th Anniversary event was made possible through a quiet sponsorship for this occasion, and SCEC extends its sincere thanks to everyone who attended and helped make the day so meaningful.
As we celebrate 45 years of action, advocacy and community, SCEC looks forward with optimism to the next chapter — and to another 45 years of working together for a healthy Sunshine Coast environment.
